Exfoliation is probably one of the most important (and easiest) things you can do to keep your skin looking smoother, healthier and more vibrant. Although most facial treatments include exfoliation, it is important to remember to exfoliate at home as part of your regular skin car routine.

What is exfoliation exactly?

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface (epidermis) layer of the skin. Although these skin cells fall off naturally, some cling on and build up over time. This build up can lead skin to look dull, lackluster and dry. A simple exfoliation at home can help reduce this build up.

How often do I need to do it?

Exfoliating the skin is not the same as cleansing your face (which should be done daily). Depending on your skin type and individual needs, the number of times you should exfoliate your skin can vary. Most people exfoliate their skin 2-3 times per week. For special skin concerns (sensitive skin, medical conditions, etc. – consult with a licensed esthetician).

How are at-home exfoliants different from cleansers?

A cleanser removes debris from the skin such as dirt and make-up. It is a surface cleanser only. Exfoliates typically contain tiny granules or micro-beads which remove any remaining build up and stubborn skin cells. Because they are more abrasive, they should not be used in place of a good daily cleanser. Both serve an important purpose in skin care.

What are the different types available?

Again, this depends on your individual needs. There are very good at-home exfoliators which are sometimes combined with a daily cleanser.

There are stronger exfoliants which rely upon more active ingredients (such as glycolic and salicylic acid) which are great for mature skin that may need a stronger exfioliant to remove those dead skin cells. Remember, as we age the process of removing dead skin cells slows and can lead in increased build up over time.

Where can I find an exfoliator for me?

Remember to look for products that are suitable for your skin type and concerns. Jojoba cleansers are a wonderful choice because the gentle micro-beads are great for all skin types and are combined with an effective daily cleanser.

Cautions

When choosing any skin care product it is important to pay attention to follow all directions. Over exfoliation can cause damage (especially for sensitive skin types). If you develop any reaction or allergies to a product, discontinue use immediately and seek medical advice.

Coming home at the end of the day and taking a nice long, hot shower is a daily indulgence that anyone can appreciate. Nothing feels better than getting rid of the stress of the day and allowing the soothing feel of water to wash away your stresses and frustration. Before reaching for your favorite bar of soap however, have you considered the soothing effects of a high quality body scrub to do more than just cleanse your skin? Leave your shower feeling more than refreshed, leave it feeling revitalized and ready to go!

A body scrub is one of those wonderful products that offer many benefits to the body, mind and soul. Although most people will use a standard bar soap for cleansing purposes and call it a day, they are not left with a truly satisfying experience. Remember that a shower or bath is a time to relax, allow the tension of the day to drift out of your muscles and ease your mind of stress.

In the simplest form a body scrub uses a gentle abrasive texture to assist in the cleansing and exfoliation of the skin. Over time dead skin cells accumulate on the surface and leave the skin looking tired, uneven and sometimes dry or flaky. The texture will become rougher over time and eventually standard soap and water will no longer work their charm in making you feel truly clean when you emerge to face the world. Indeed, most bar soaps cannot truly penetrate the skin and offer deep clean and hydrating benefits that a simple body scrub can provide in one simple step.

There are many types of body scrubs available that consist of varying textures and ingredients. Many day spas will include a body scrub with their services because the soothing scent and benefits to the skin will enhance the pampering experience they can offer to their clientele. Bringing that experience home can be a truly wonderful way to have a small luxury to look forward to after a long day and work, school or strenuous physical activity.

Popular ingredients and bases for scrubs include salt, oil, sugar, herbal remedies and fruit blends. A good body scrub with have a slightly grainy texture and fragrance that is pleasant and soothing to the consumer. Remember that body scrubs are a total sensory experience and should be tailored to fit your individual needs and preferences.

Body scrubs are not recommended for use if you have skin conditions such as sun damage (like burning) or sensitivity to topical products as the body scrub may worsen these conditions. Consult with a doctor and/or trained esthetician if you have any concerns regarding certain ingredients or health issues. Discontinue use if you notice any adverse reactions such as itchiness, redness, rashes or discomfort during or after use.

Take advantage of the simple pleasures in life and try incorporating a body scrub into your routine. Not only will your skin feel smooth and refreshed but hydrated and nourished to the deepest level. Create your own soothing spa experience at home and keep the “back from the spa” refreshed feeling all week long.

Understanding proper skin care is an important lesson to learn at an early age. The skin, like everything else in your body, needs to be taken care of in order to keep it healthy and looking beautiful. By incorporating a simple skin care plan into your daily routine, you can easily prevent early signs of aging and reverse common problems such as acne and treat your skin for other issues such as dryness or oily textures.
Many people believe that by washing their face with soap and water they have removed all the grime from their pores and their skin is as clean as it can be. This is simply not true. A basic cleanser is an important step in helping the skin to remove surface grime and make up, but it does not penetrate the pores or effectively remove the build up of dead skin cells that lead to severe skin problems. The simple addition of a facial exfoliate on a regular basis can work wonders on the overall look and feel of your skin.
Exfoliation is a simple process that not only removes dead skins cells by “scrubbing” the face, it also provides a deep cleaning solution for the pores to remove excess oil and dirt. Exfoliation products are available as pads, brushes, scrubs and facial washes. Choosing the correct type for your skin and individual needs is important to ensure the greatest benefit and results. Exfoliation washes are available for all major skin types including normal, oily, dry, combination and sensitive skin types.
You may be asking if exfoliating is really that beneficial and if it is worth your time and energy. By exfoliating your face on a regular basis you will see a vast improvement in your overall complexion (2-3 times per week based on your skin type). For instance, if your skin is oily or highly overactive with breakouts and blackheads, Bellanina owner Nina Howard recommends exfoliation every other day.  If however, your skin is dry and thinning, less frequent exfoliation is required.   Exfoliation will assist in the development of new and healthy skin cells by removing the older and dead skin that can build up over time and lead to premature wrinkles. By cleansing the pores it will also reduce the amount of oils that lead to acne, white heads and black heads.
There are several different types of exfoliants available on the market today and choosing an effective treatment for your face is important. Consult with a skin care expert if you are unsure of which treatment would be best or try a variety of sample sized exfoliants to decide which type works best for your skin. Exfoliation products range from mild and gentle textures such as the Bellanina Jojoba Exfoli-Cleanser or Fine Polish Facial Beads to stronger solutions with a grainier texture and active ingredients for deep treatment; the Bellanina Microdemabrasion Creme or Salicylic Enzyme Exfoliant are both great choices.

Remember to take care of your skin and to begin your daily routine as soon as possible. Follow all directions carefully for any skin care product you decide to use and discontinue use if you experience any adverse reactions such as itching, redness or dryness after use. Complete your daily routine with a daily cleanser, exfoliant and moisturizer to help clean and refresh your skin. Skin care is best begun at a young age but it is never to late to start looking and feeling your great by putting your best face forward every day.
