Celebrities are notorious for being accused of using cosmetic surgery to maintain their good looks into maturity. A little “nip & tuck” procedure to reduce lines, redefine the chin or lift the brow can knock several years off your appearance. For decades, plastic surgery has been the solution to many middle aged (and sometimes younger) women and men’s solution to the battle against aging.
But before you go under the knife, consider the alternatives and evaluate your options carefully. Unnecessary surgery is not only time consuming and expensive, it also places your body under extreme stress and physical discomfort during the healing process. Added to that…without a change in how you care for your skin and body, you will still suffer the effects of aging down the line. More surgery means more scarring and more time spent trying to recover. The face and body is meant to age and it is a natural process. By using surgery to turn back the hands of time the face you see staring back at you in the mirror will not be your younger self, merely a shadow of who you used to be.

Learning about alternatives to surgery and testing a few non invasive procedures out is a great way to see significant results without the excessive costs and risks. Understanding what is happening to your face and body, why your appearance is changing, is a valuable tool in learning new ways to combat these problems without needing to resort to surgical intervention.

What causes fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin?

There is a myriad of reasons why our skin begins to lose that tight and toned look. A major reason is the slowed production of collagen and loss of elasticity that allowed your skin to stay firm in your younger years. This will lead to sagging, hallowed cheeks and loose skin around the eyes, neck and ears.
Wrinkles are another common complaint that can be the result of natural aging as well. We all know that skin sheds and new skin cells are being formed constantly and migrate to the surface but what you may not know is that as we age this process slows also and sometimes the dead skin cells don’t shed away as easily. As skin cells accumulate on the surface this causes lines and wrinkles to form (dry and unhealthy appearing skin are also results).

So what can you do?

Lack of proper skin care can be the source of many early signs of aging. Developing a healthy skin care routine and targeting any problem areas before they become severe can dramatically slow the signs of aging. This includes cleansing the skin, using a daily moisturizer that is designed for maturing skin (boost collagen production, stimulates skin, etc.) and protecting yourself from excessive sun exposure.
It sounds too simple and easy to be effective, right? The truth of the matter is that by treating your skin right and keeping a daily routine, your skin can stay smooth well into older age. It’s all about taking control of the process of aging and not allowing problems to build up with no preventative action.

But I Really Want Something Dramatic, Not More Creams!

Maintaining a regular routine will be important no matter which route you decide on but if you are looking for something more dramatic that doesn’t involve surgery, there are options! Have you considered a facelift massage series? Not quite a facial, not just a massage but an innovative combination that stimulates the skin and more importantly the muscles beneath the skin.

A facelift massage typically requires a series of 6 (ideally 12) treatments that is designed to stimulate the collagen production and renew the former elasticity of the skin, while smoothing the fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, mouth and neck. It is a relaxing treatment that takes typically an hour to complete.
The Bellanina Facelift Massage is a wonderful example of this revolutionary technique. Inspired by treatments used during the stars in Hollywood’s glamour days, the Bellanina Facelift Massage will rejuvenate the skin while soothing the mind and senses. Bellanina practitioners are available around the United States and can work with clients to target individual concerns and needs.

Where can I learn more?

Check out alternative options to surgery online and do your research carefully. Fully understand the benefits and potential risks before making your decision. Try an alternative treatment before resorting to consulting a plastic surgeon- you may be surprised how a change in behavior can result in significant changes to your appearance and outlook on skin care.

Make up is perhaps the ultimate catch 22.By covering uneven skin tones, adding eye catching lipstick and making your eyes “pop” with the perfect lash enhancing mascara, you can magically transform from ordinary to extraordinary! But what about at the end of the day when you come home and the last thing you want to do is stand in the bathroom for twenty minutes scrubbing your face clean? Do you just go to bed and worry about it in the morning? Anything meant for your face can’t be that bad for your skin, right?

The answer is NO.

Make up is extremely detrimental to your skin and can cause havoc on your efforts to keep your skin healthy and radiant naturally. Make up can only go so far to cover common skin problems (such as uneven coloring, blemishes, fine lines) but at the end of the day, proper skin care is going to be your greatest ally in keeping yourself looking beautiful in the years to come. If you want to wear make up during the day, remember to time into properly taking it off at the end of the day.

Use a basic make up remover A cleanser specifically designed to remove make up is a great way to break down the oils and other ingredients used in most cosmetics to keep them on and prevent smearing during the day. A good eye make up remover should be used because these will be specifically designed to prevent irritation during use and gently remove build up from mascara and eye shadows in the fine lines surrounding the sensitive eye tissue.

Use: Apply remover to cotton pad and gentle wipe across skin (so not apply pressure around eye). Allow remover to dissolve make up and may need to be repeated.

Remember that although you may have removed all the visible traces of make up from your skin, trace amounts of grimes and oils are still embedded in your pores and it is important to cleanse properly to remove these as well. Build up in the pores leads to acne, break outs and unhealthy build up of dead skin cells over time. Keep your skin clean and happy by using a daily cleanser, exfoliate and toner. Dirt, grime and debris are the last think you want covering your skin before going to bed at night and will not leave you feelinf refreshed and beautiful in the morning. Remember it’s call beauty sleep for a reason!

Want to hear a secret? Did you know that proper skin care can reduce or eliminate the need to wear make up entirely? No joke!

Skin care products meant to tone and target many common skin complaints can be used to eliminate these problems completely. Think of all the time and money you could save by developing a daily skin care routine that would give you the beautiful and vibrant skin you have always dreamed of (without cosmetic enhancement). The “Sunless” Tan

Its summer time and that means shorts, tank tops and flip slop sandals but anyone who lives in colder climates knows that winter weather and gray skies leads to pale and pasty appearing legs and arms. Although it is tempting to run outside and lie in the sun for a few hours to correct this, we have all heard about the dangers of SUV rays and the potential for skin cancer down the road. This leads to the catch-22: wanting a tan but not wanting to risk getting a tan.

Backing up a moment, let’s take a look at what a tan is exactly and how it affects the skin in the short and long term. The skin itself has two main layers called the epidermis and the dermis – tanning (sunless or traditional) involves the epidermis. Tanning is actually the skin’s natural defense system against overexposure to UVA and UVB rays from the sun. Your skin is actually trying to protect your body from the potential damage when you begin to sport that bronze glow.

Frequent exposure to the sun, tanning beds or sun lamps have some definite down sides that have been extensively researched. The link between skin cancer and tanning alone should be enough to dissuade this activity but since the effects are not seen right away it is easy for some people to dismiss the real danger they are exposing themselves to on a daily basis. This is not to say that exposure to the sun is bad, on the contrary it is actually very important to maintaining a healthy body, but how much is the question.

A more immediate (and visible) effect of the damage the sun can cause is the sun burn. Redness, itching and sensitivity are all problems that come from overexposure with no protection. If that is the short term damage that can happen in one day, can you imagine what frequent tanning is doing to your skin’s health over several years even without burning?

Other potential damage to your skin includes dryness, premature wrinkling, decreased defenses against free radicals….the list goes on and on. So the only real question is….is it really worth it?

Options!

So now what? You understand tanning is not good for you but you still want to have a nice tan anyway. Don’t think you will be the exception to the damaging effects, instead think smarter and find alternatives! The sunless self tanner has become a revolution in the consumer market because it provides all the benefits of a tan without the damaging repercussions.

Sunless self tanners have a bad reputation for producing unnatural or uneven tones in the skin. This is entirely possible if you do not take the time and care to read all instructions and apply your sunless tanner correctly. Here are a few simple steps to help ensure a wonderful and even sunless tan this season and all year round:

1) Prepare your skin!
Shave, cleanse and exfoliate! You want your tanner to go into fresh and healthy skin – not clinging to dead skins.

2) Do Not Use Other Products!
Don’t risk weird product interactions by moisturizing before or after applying your tanner – remember that the goal is a smooth and even texture, not a blotchy pattern.

3) Use Gloves!
Tanner is meant to penetrate the skin and the more applied to one area, the darker that area will be. Using gloves will prevent your hands from looking like you just played in the sand and forgot to wash up/

4) Make a System!
Even color is essential to avoid the “fake” look most tanners are criticized for. Begin with one leg and go from top to bottom in sections. Follow the same plan for legs, chest, stomach, back, etc. Do not apply to random areas and risk forgetting where you have already completed.

5) Ask a Friend!
Okay, maybe you don’t want anyone to know your faking it but big blotchy patches on your back will be a dead give away anyway. Ask a buddy to help you with any areas of the body you cannot reach or see easily to prevent missing an area.

6) Time is Important
Applying a tanner can be time consuming and rushing through the process will lead to mistakes and terrible results. Give yourself time to apply the tanner thoroughly AND time to allow it to dry.

Give your skin that fresh summer glow without the damage! Try a sunless self tanner this year and have all the benefits without the worry.

Before understanding how alpha lipoic acids are used in the cosmetic industry, it is a good idea to develop a basic understanding of what it is to begin with. Whether you are a massage therapist, esthetician, retailer or consumer, developing a knowledge base of what ingredients are included in most cosmetics and more importantly, why they are included, will help you make a better informed decision about which products to use and sell. Remember that not all products available on the market are the same and quality of ingredients does make a significant impact on the efficacy of a particular product.

Alpha lipoic acids exist in every cell of the body already – it is the essential component we need to convert glucose into energy. Alpha lipoic acids also serve as anti-oxidants that seek out and destroy potentially harmful free radicals in the body. Free radicals can cause cell damage and lower the ability of the body to fight of infections. Unlike most anti-oxidants, alpha lipoic acids functions with equal effectiveness in water and fat. This makes it more effective than other anti-oxidants (such as vitamin c, which water soluble) when making its way through the human body cells.

Reminds you of high school biology class, right? Although it may not make for interesting reading, it does make for interesting results when utilized correctly to maximize the benefits to your skin. Since many Cosmeceuticals advertise “alpha lipoic acid” as a key ingredient, don’t you want to know what it is doing for you?

Sometimes simply referred to as “lipoic acid” or “ALA”, when used as part of a skin care regimen alpha lipoic acid is known for improving skin texture and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Typically sold in creams and serums, alpha lipoic acids are usually combined with DMAE and vitamin c (three products that form a synergy together and increase the effectiveness of all three). Alpha lipoic acids are seeking out those damaging free radicals (which can come from the environment and cause terrible damage to the skin) and reverse those effects.

Clinical studies have ranged when testing the efficacy of alpha lipoic acid to reduce fine lines and wrinkles but have suggested that lipoic acid does seem to impact the appearance of fine to moderate wrinkles. Better tolerated than other treatments, alpha lipoic acid can be used on more delicate skin tissue (such as the eyes) with less chance of irritation. Research studies expand well beyond skin care and have researched the potential impacts of alpha lipoic acid and its restorative properties on other common ailments.

Now that you have learned a little more about alpha lipoic acids and how they impact you, perhaps your next trip to the store or searching online will encourage you to review the ingredients and choose a product best suited to your needs. Many people have found dramatic results by incorporating an alpha lipoic based skin cream or serum into their routine and noticed a decrease in the lines around their eyes, cheeks and mouth. Consult with an esthetician or dermatologist if you have additional questions or concerns.

As with all topical treatments it is important to pay attention to any signs of allergic reactions. Discontinue use immediately if you notice redness, swelling or itchy at the areas of application. Follow all instructions carefully according to individual product directions.

Stay informed about your products and know what your using and why. It is easy to get swept away by clever marketing campaigns but the wise person studies all options, examines the results and chooses carefully based on knowledge. Never forget that knowledge is your greatest ally when it comes to your health and well being.

Looking back over the years of abuse you put your skin through and its no wonder one day you wake up and realize you don’t recognize the face staring back at you in the mirror. There may be fine lines around your eyes, a slight sagging in your cheeks or perhaps your skin tone is no longer even in color. Youth may be wasted on the young but knowledge and experience has given you the key to living a healthy and happy life so why let your face look old when you are in the prime of your existence?

Anyone who watches Sex and the City knows that being forty or fifty doesn’t mean slowly down and accepting a slow and inevitable decline. Take back your life and know that once the kids have grown and retirement is on the way, this is the time to seize life and live it to the fullest! You’re not ready to slow down so why shouldn’t you look your best at any age?
There are two types of aging that both men and women should be aware of: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic aging is the natural and genetic process of aging that begins in the early to mid 20s. Most of this aging is determined by our genetic roots. Ever hear the expression “if you want to know what a woman will look like in twenty years, look at her mother”?
Extrinsic aging are factors that have been influenced by the environment such as smoking, pollution, sun damage, etc. This area includes anything that we have exposed our skin and bodies to throughout our entire lives! Yes, this includes all those fabulous tans from your twenties.

Fine lines and wrinkles are perhaps the most obvious sign that our skin has lost some of its former elasticity and collagen. The hallmarked “crow’s feet” around the eyes, wrinkle between the brows and laugh lines all reflect hours of joy, sorrow and stress in our lives, but who wants those reminders all over their face? Fight this foe with products specially designed for mature skin and target these problems. There are several high quality moisturizers available that will boost collagen production and restore some of the lost elasticity which will help diminish the appearance of lines on the face.
Uneven skin tone is characterized by the formation of darker areas of skin, brown spots or variations in color predominantly on the face and hands. This can be the result of a variety of factors but the result is the same – discoloration of the skin that can be embarrassing and unsightly. There are many simple home remedies including serums, masques and creams that will help even out the skin when used correctly.
Dry or rough skin is a common problem for many people (young and old) but fortunately has a simple remedy. As we age our ability to shed dead skins cells decreases dramatically. Over time the dead cells on the surface of our skin build up and make the skin appear dry, rough and flaky in appearance. Removal of those skin cells will help to alleviate this problem and reveal younger and smoother skin in a short amount of time. A good exfoliant will clear up this problem but remember the skin only needs to be exfoliated occasionally (once or twice a week) – overexfoliation can lead to irritation and cause more problems in the future.

Take care of your skin by either taking preventative action in your twenties or restorative action when you realize you no longer look like you did when you were twenty. Try to add one or two new items into your daily skin routine, mix and match products until you find a combination that leaves your face feeling smoother, younger and a better reflection of the person inside. Now is the time to put your best face forward!

Your eyes are perhaps the most important focal point of your entire face. The eyes are not only your way of seeing the world but the world’s way of understanding your emotions and gauging your reactions to situations. Your eyes provide more information to the people around you than you are probably aware. Think about the eyes and what makes them beautiful and vibrant to look at – you are probably not imagining dark baggy circles beneath them are you?

Puffy eyes are the result of a variety of factors including fluid retention, allergies, hormones, stress and swelling. This produces a pouch like appearance beneath the lower lid. The skin surrounding the eye is much thinner than other areas of the face and therefore is much more sensitive to irritation and other factors. Other factors that may lead to the development of puffy eyes include lack of sleep, high sodium diets (another form of fluid retention) and excessive drinking could also be a culprit.

Dark circles are surrounded in much misinformation and myth. For example, if you have dark circles under your eyes, how often has a simple eight hours of sleep completely diminished them? Dark eyes are not the simple result of staying up all night and cramming for an exam. They are actually the product of oxidizing hemoglobin. That may sound scary but it is actually the result of a natural process by the body when moving blood through the tiny capillaries surrounding your eyes. If the blood gets “off track” it begins to form dark, bruise like appearances under the skin and ta-da under your eyes.

Puffy and dark eyes are a common complaint mainly because of how tired and old they can make you appear. Since these problems are so commonly associated with a lack of sleep or stress, they can also invite unwelcome comments and questions regarding your appearance. While they cannot be cleared up overnight, there are several home remedies that can significantly reduce the appearance of dark circles and decrease swelling under the eyes. More significant eye puffiness that is the result of the natural aging process may require outside assistance.

There are several products available to help alleviate both these problems and with consistent use, will produce dramatic results. A Refreshing Anti-Puff Eye Gel is a great way to reduce under eye puffiness by 65% in as little as 28 days. This gel will reduce water retention while improving the original firmness and elasticity of the area. Using a good moisturizer designed for sensitive eye tissue will help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well.

A good Dark Circle Diminisher will help to reduce the darkness beneath and near the eyes. Typically these are a serum rubbed on before other moisturizers and serums are applied. Pairing this with a strong Eye Lift Gel will promote dramatic difference in the overall appearance of your eyes and face.

When people look into your eyes you want them to remark on how beautiful and youthful they appear, not on how tired you look and that is why taking steps now before the problems become severe and require extensive treatments will save you time and grief. No one likes to be singled out regarding their appearance, especially when it is something that is easily correctable. Bring a fresh and younger look back to your face today by taking getting rid of the excess baggage!

Acid on your skin? Are we crazy to even suggest such a thing? We’re crazy about great skin care products for the average consumer looking for fast and effective treatments perhaps. Don’t let the “acid” in skin care scare you away from trying out some effective treatments for a common problem that can plague someone for a lifetime: acne.

Before learning about the treatment it is important to learn about the problem in question.

Acne is more than just a mild annoyance on the skin that will clear up on its own. It is actually defined as an inflammatory disease involving the sebaceous glands of the skin. The trademark sign of an acne problem is hallmarked by the eruption of pimples or pustules, especially on the face. This is an especially common occurrence during the adolescent years.

There is also a distant related cousin to be aware of called Rosacea. This is a chronic skin condition characterized by facial erythema (redness). This condition is an especially common occurrence for middle aged women with pale or fair skin tones. Since this is often coined as “adult acne”, treatments for the two conditions can usually be very similar.

But what can you do?

Combating any skin issue can sometimes be a time consuming process. Just like going to the gym once will not tone your muscles permanently, applying one skin care treatment will probably not clear up your skin completely. Truly effective skin care treatments require time and patience to reverse damage and prevent further outbreaks from occurring. Remember these are the two main goals of any solution: maintenance and prevention.

This is where treatments utilizing Salicylic Acid step into the picture and really shine. Think of salicylic acid as the heavy weight champion in the battle against acne and rosacea because it targets oil while exfoliating the pores. It neutralizes the bacteria that have formed inside the pores and this will help prevent the build up of oils again and in turn, preventing future breakouts from occurring.

Important note: salicylic acid should not be used during pregnancy.

Salicylic treatments should only be used as directed and it is essential to follow ALL skin care directions with any product. Overuse of salicylic treatments can lead to dryness of the skin or may cause irritation. It is recommended that during the course of any treatment containing salicylic acid that sun protection should be used including protecting the skin from direct exposure as well as the use of a sun block. Follow any use of salicylic treatments with an oil free moisturizer to restore skin hydration.

Help keep your face looking clear with a treatment plan that has stood the test of time and can produce dramatic results. Consult with your esthetician or dermatologist with any questions regarding your specific skin type or any other pre-existing conditions.

With so much advertising and media today it is sometimes difficult to weed out fact from fiction. Companies will make claims about the effectiveness of their products and how it will dramatically reverse the hands of time but how can the average consumer really know the truth? Nina Howard believes that the real proof is in the results she sees in the mirror every day.

A thirty second television ad can’t show the benefits of a product adequately. It can’t begin to explain to the emerging baby boomer generation that now is the time to take a stand against early signs of aging and put a stop to the detrimental effects it can have upon the skin. That is why the director of Bellanina, Nina Howard, is willing to be the poster child for the benefits of proper skin care.

Nina has been faithfully using her products for over a decade. Daily cleansing, toning, moisturizing and correcting as needed has kept her skin youthful and vibrant. After attending her forty year class reunion she was named “Best Preserved” by her fellow classmates. This is not the result of an overnight magic wand treatment – this is the result of dedication to proper skin care and taking the time every morning to keep her skin looking fabulous every day!

Aging is a natural process that can be affected by genetics and external factors. By knowing this and taking control of the situation as soon as possible it is within your grasp to prevent the formation of fine lines and wrinkles, decrease uneven skin tones and find a solution to redness, dry or cracked skin and other common problems. Don’t think of aging process as an inevitable decline in your appearance because it does not have to be. Aging is accumulation of wisdom and experience and by knowing that age your chronological age becomes just a number, not a punishment.

Follow Nina’s example by not letting Mother Nature take control! Bellanina products are available in three wonderful lines including Botanicals, Naturals and Cosmeceuticals. Each line offers a range of products that will focus on specific skin care issues relevant to you and your needs.

Take a page from Nina’s book and don’t let your age keep you down. With her high spirited dog, Ling Ling, trying to keep up, Nina spends her days working hard and isn’t letting anyone tell her to slow down and “act” her age. After all, you are only as old as you feel.

Getting Your Vitamin C…For Your Skin?

Everyone knows that vitamin c is essential for a healthy diet but did you know that it can benefit your skin too? Not by eating foods rich in Vitamin C however, by topical (applied directly to the skin) treatments. Learn something new every day, right?

So how can you maximize the benefits of vitamin c and use it to its full potential?

Before running out to find a product rich in Vitamin C and rubbing it all over your body, it helps to understand why Vitamin C is so good for you to begin with. In simple terms, Vitamin C can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while also having a rejuvenation effect on the skin. Although many skin care products claim to do these same things, products rich in Vitamin C have the research to back this claim up.

What does is it do exactly?

Vitamin C is best known for its capabilities as an antioxidant. It is nature’s best defense against free radicals that attack the skin (these can range from environmental factors such as pollution to smoking to prolonged exposure to the sun). By counteracting the effects of free radicals your skin will appear healthier, with better texture and tone.

An added bonus is Vitamin C and its role in the production of collagen. As the body ages it no longer produces collagen as effectively and the skin (especially on the cheeks and neck) will begin to sag and droop. By using an effective Vitamin C treatment it is possible to boost production and help prevent this from occurring. The natural aging process does not mean being doomed to have terrible looking skin.

That’s great, but what is the catch?

The “catch” is Vitamin C is an extremely unstable and can oxidize easily. Once Vitamin C oxidizes is no longer combats free radicals and may actually begin to increase free radical production. Most Cosmeceuticals have begun using derivatives of Vitamin C which may not have as high an efficacy but will last longer in their products.

Where Should I Look…?

Many products will use Vitamin C as an active ingredient but a great place to start using Vitamin C rich moisturizer. This is a simple way to apply Vitamin C directly to the skin and begin to see many of the benefits. Benefits will include smoother skin, a more even texture and an increase the collagen in the cheeks, necks and areas around the eyes.

Another great choice is a lip treatment that will help repair cracked and damaged lips. Over time lips begin to thin and pale – these effects can be counteracted with a simple lip balm (many contain SPF also to protect against sun damage)!

Vitamin C will show up in a wide spectrum of products that will benefit many consumers with skin problems. From a solution for hyperpigmentation (freckles, sun spots, etc.) to anti aging serums, Vitamin C will benefit people of all ages and all skin types.

Final Thoughts on Vitamin C

Always remember to read all instructions carefully when beginning any new skin treatment. Maintaining a diet rich in vitamin C as well as using topical skin creams and products will aide in receiving all the benefits Vitamin C has to offer the body. With any treatment consult a doctor or esthetician if you have any questions or concerns. Discontinue use of products if any negative reactions develop such as redness, itching or rashes.

Get your daily dose of Vitamin C in more ways than one and let Mother Nature be your ally in your battle against aging and damaged skin!
